Privacy Policy
This policy explains how information is handled when you visit the SmartReader website or use the SmartReader iOS application.
Last updated: 26 August 2026
This Privacy Policy applies to the SmartReader website and the SmartReader: Learn English iOS application. Privacy practices for other platform versions may be described separately where they differ.
1. Who is responsible?
The person responsible for SmartReader and the processing described in this policy is:
Vladyslav Zymovskyi
Email: support@smartreader.app
2. Website privacy
Website hosting
The SmartReader website is hosted using Firebase Hosting, a service provided by Google. When you open the website, technical request information may be processed automatically to deliver the requested pages, maintain security, detect abuse and keep the service available.
This technical information may include:
- IP address;
- date and time of the request;
- requested page or file;
- browser and device information;
- referrer and technical response information.
Web analytics, advertising and cookies
This website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-focused service provided by Cloudflare, Inc. The service helps measure page views, referral sources and the technical performance of the website.
Cloudflare Web Analytics is loaded through a JavaScript beacon. According to Cloudflare, the service does not use cookies or local storage, does not fingerprint individual visitors and does not track people across different websites.
The analytics may include aggregated information about the requested page, referrer, browser and device characteristics, country and website performance metrics.
The SmartReader website does not use Google Analytics, advertising trackers or marketing cookies.
Further information is available in the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
Email contact
When you contact SmartReader by email, the information contained in your message is processed to read and respond to your request. This may include your name, email address, message content and technical email metadata.
Email information is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary to handle the request or satisfy applicable legal obligations.
3. Information processed by the iOS application
Account information
When you create or use a SmartReader account, we may process:
- your name or display name;
- your email address;
- your Firebase user ID;
- sign-in information required to create, authenticate and maintain your account.
SmartReader supports Firebase Authentication, Sign in with Apple and Google Sign-In. SmartReader does not receive your Apple or Google account password.
User-provided content
Depending on the features you use, you may create or provide:
- your own stories and story titles;
- a topic or title for AI Story;
- text submitted to Smart Adapt;
- text recognized from an image using OCR;
- other text you enter into relevant SmartReader features.
User-provided content may be stored in your SmartReader account so that the app can save, synchronize and display it.
When you choose to use an AI-powered feature, only the content needed for that specific feature may be sent to the applicable AI service. SmartReader does not automatically send all of your account information or all of your content with every AI request.
Images used for OCR are processed locally on your device. The image itself is not sent to an external AI service as part of the OCR process. Recognized text may later be processed by an AI service if you choose an AI-powered feature such as Smart Adapt.
Reading and app activity
SmartReader may store information needed to provide and synchronize app functionality, including:
- reading progress;
- saved stories;
- vocabulary and favorites;
- learning progress and statistics;
- reading preferences and app settings;
- other account-related learning or application state.
4. Voice recordings and AI voice processing
When you use Speak, pronunciation or Listening exercises, or Speak Live, SmartReader may send your voice recording to a third-party artificial intelligence service for:
- speech recognition;
- pronunciation analysis;
- speaking feedback;
- live voice conversation functionality.
SmartReader asks for your explicit permission before sending your voice recording to a third-party AI service. If you select “Not Now,” SmartReader does not send your voice recording to those AI services.
You may later grant or revoke this permission in SmartReader Settings. Revoking permission stops future voice transfers for the affected AI voice features.
SmartReader does not permanently store raw voice recordings in Firestore, Firebase Storage or another persistent SmartReader backend database.
Some pronunciation features use temporary audio files solely to complete the processing you requested. Temporary audio files on the SmartReader backend are deleted after the processing attempt, whether processing succeeds or fails.
Speak Live streams microphone audio directly from your device to Google's AI service. Speak Live audio does not pass through the SmartReader backend.
Revoking voice permission does not automatically delete information that a third-party provider may already have processed under its applicable privacy and retention practices.
5. Artificial intelligence features
SmartReader uses artificial intelligence services provided by OpenAI and Google for certain optional features.
The information sent depends on the feature you choose to use:
- speaking and pronunciation features may send your voice recording for speech processing;
- Smart Adapt may send text you provide for adaptation;
- AI Story may send the topic, title or prompt you provide;
- quiz or grammar features may send the relevant story or educational content needed to generate the requested material;
- Speak Live may send microphone audio and relevant story context to provide an interactive voice conversation.
Using one AI feature does not mean that every AI provider receives all of your SmartReader data.
AI processing is used to provide the functionality you request. SmartReader does not use your data for targeted advertising, cross-app tracking or the sale of user data.
Voice recordings are sent to third-party AI services only after the required explicit voice-processing permission has been granted.
6. Subscription information
Subscriptions on iOS are purchased and processed by Apple through StoreKit and the App Store. SmartReader does not receive your payment-card number, bank account information or other payment credentials.
SmartReader may process limited subscription information needed to:
- determine access to paid features;
- validate purchases;
- restore subscription access;
- prevent the same purchase from being improperly associated with multiple SmartReader accounts.
This may include subscription product information, entitlement status, expiration or renewal status and transaction-related identifiers.
7. How we use information
We use information to:
- create, authenticate and maintain your account;
- save and synchronize stories, learning progress, preferences and application state;
- provide reading, vocabulary, listening, pronunciation, speaking, grammar, quiz and story features;
- provide AI-powered features that you choose to use;
- validate subscriptions and determine access to paid features;
- prevent improper reuse of subscription purchases;
- maintain the security, reliability and operation of SmartReader;
- respond to privacy and support requests.
SmartReader does not sell user data and does not use your data for cross-app tracking or targeted advertising.
8. When we share information
SmartReader shares information only when necessary to provide, secure or support the relevant feature or service. Depending on the feature, service providers may include:
- Firebase and Google infrastructure for authentication, cloud storage, synchronization and backend functionality;
- OpenAI for applicable AI-powered text, speech-recognition, pronunciation and speaking features;
- Google AI services for applicable AI-powered text and live voice features;
- Apple and the App Store for Sign in with Apple, subscription purchases, purchase restoration and transaction verification where applicable;
- Cloudflare for privacy-focused analytics of the SmartReader website.
The data shared depends on the service or feature you choose. Using one SmartReader feature does not mean that every service provider receives all of your SmartReader information.
We require service providers processing information on behalf of SmartReader to protect it consistently with this Policy, applicable contractual requirements and applicable law, and to use it only for the relevant service. Providers may also process information under their own applicable privacy policies, service terms and data-retention practices.
SmartReader may disclose information when required by applicable law or when reasonably necessary to protect SmartReader, its users or the security of the service.
SmartReader does not sell your information to third parties.
9. Data storage and retention
Account information, user-provided content, reading progress and related application data may be stored while your account exists or while the information is needed to provide the relevant SmartReader functionality.
SmartReader does not permanently store raw voice recordings in its persistent backend databases. Temporary pronunciation audio used by the SmartReader backend is deleted after the processing attempt. Speak Live audio is sent directly from your device to Google's AI service.
After account deletion, SmartReader may retain only a minimal purchase-ownership record where necessary to prevent an already-used App Store or other supported purchase from being improperly associated with another SmartReader account.
This retained record does not contain:
- your Firebase user ID;
- your name;
- your email address;
- your subscription product;
- your subscription status;
- expiration information;
- your SmartReader profile information.
The retained purchase-protection record is not actively linked to your deleted SmartReader account and is used only to prevent improper reuse of an existing purchase.
Third-party providers, including Apple, Firebase/Google, OpenAI, Google AI services and Cloudflare, process and retain information under their applicable service terms, privacy policies and data-processing practices.
10. Your choices and controls
You can:
- choose whether to use optional AI-powered features;
- select “Not Now” when asked for permission to send voice recordings to third-party AI services;
- revoke previously granted voice-processing permission in SmartReader Settings;
- manage or delete supported content through available app controls;
- delete your SmartReader account from within the app;
- contact us with privacy or deletion questions.
11. Account deletion
You can request deletion of your SmartReader account using the Delete Account option inside the app. For security, you may be asked to authenticate again before deletion.
When account deletion completes, SmartReader deletes:
- your Firebase Authentication account;
- your SmartReader profile;
- user-provided stories and other account content;
- learning and reading data associated with your account;
- applicable usage records;
- account-linked subscription entitlement records;
- applicable local account data stored by SmartReader on your device.
If you use Sign in with Apple, SmartReader also revokes the associated Sign in with Apple authorization as part of the account-deletion process.
SmartReader may retain only the minimal non-account-identifying purchase-protection record described in Section 9.
Deleting your SmartReader account does not automatically cancel an active App Store subscription. App Store subscriptions are managed through your Apple account and App Store subscription settings.
12. Tracking, advertising and technical information
Authentication, cloud and other service SDKs used by SmartReader may process limited technical information such as device-related information, network-derived information or diagnostics needed for authentication, security, reliability and app functionality.
The current SmartReader iOS app does not use Firebase Analytics or Firebase Crashlytics. SmartReader does not use advertising SDKs, IDFA or App Tracking Transparency for cross-app tracking.
SmartReader does not use your app data for targeted advertising or cross-app tracking.
13. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical and organizational measures designed to protect information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration or disclosure.
No electronic transmission or storage method can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
14. Children's privacy
SmartReader is an educational application and is not directed to children under 13. SmartReader is not presented as an App Store Kids Category application.
We do not knowingly seek to collect personal information from children under 13 in violation of applicable law. If you are a parent or guardian and believe that a child has provided information through SmartReader without permission required by applicable law, please contact us. We will review the request and take appropriate action, including deletion where required.
15. Your data protection rights
Subject to the conditions of applicable data protection law, you may have the right to request:
- access to personal data concerning you;
- correction of inaccurate information;
- erasure of personal data;
- restriction of processing;
- objection to processing;
- data portability where applicable.
You may also lodge a complaint with the competent data protection authority. In Austria, this is the Austrian Data Protection Authority.
16. Changes to this policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated when SmartReader's website, applications, service providers, legal requirements or privacy practices change.
When we update the Policy, we will publish the revised version and update the “Last updated” date. Where required, we will provide additional notice or request new permission.
Continued use of SmartReader is not used as a substitute for explicit permission required before sending voice recordings to third-party AI services.
